That was one heck of a caper. She knows that sounds too Nancy Drew for a big time super-hero (shush, she is one) but she can't qualify the past week any other way. Ben Ulrich was definitely onto something with his case files on the rash of D-list super villain robberies, but she wasn't sure if even he could have predicted where the trail all lead, a haven for the ex-wives and ex-girlfriends and their kids.
While Jess certainly could understand, and maybe even applaud their sisterhood and ingenuity, she had to put a stop the blackmail and grand larceny. Being beat up by a working model of the exosuit from Aliens went a long way towards her being able to put her foot down and get the town to promise no more extortion. In exchange, Jess promised not to involve the authorities nor tell the fathers about the whole scheme.
She would keep an eye on them though, just to make sure they followed through. Plus, the town could be a good place to hideout if she ever needed one.
Now she had a sort of partner with Ulrich, which to be honest was nice. He had a lot of files on things that a returning to the field PI could be of use with and he was good company. Cynical with a dash of optimism just like herself.
The weird fallout was her new protege, or maybe sidekick was a better description. Roger Gocking, aka the Porcupine. After the mess with the ex-wives' haven, he'd asked her to teach him how to be a hero; which honestly was the most unexpected thing. She somehow inspired him and how could she say no?
She wasn't sure she was ready for this, but also didn't see that she had much of a choice. She did have some experience in changing from being a black hat to a white. Yippee-cay-yay mother fucker.
