Jess took her lunch to a Central Park bench and did her best to not think of anything. Ulrich’s files and research were spinning in her head and she knew she’d reached the point where she needed to let things simmer in the back of her head. Let her subconscious take over for a bit.

At the first bite of the pastrami on rye, she sighed and closed her eyes to just absorb the flavors. The sounds of the park dimmed as the spices danced across her awareness. Life didn’t get better than this.

“Marty’s makes the best pastrami, don’t they?”

The voice interrupted her bliss and she opened her eyes with a scowl. “You couldn’t give me a couple more minutes to enjoy it? You been trailing me for ten blocks, but no, you just had to interrupt the pastrami making love to my tongue.”

“TMI,” Sharon Carter said with a grin. “This is the first time you’ve been alone. Nice to know you haven’t lost your instincts.”

“What can I do for you Agent 13?” Jess wiped at the corner of her mouth with a napkin, signing again to see some of the spicy mustard being wasted to the paper.

“OK. Straight to business. Do you think America is worth protecting?”

Surprised at the question, Jess half turned to face the other woman. “What the hell kind of question is that? With my career? I’ve been an Avenger!”

“Yes. I know. But there’s a difference between protecting innocents and protecting America. Do you think America, the country is worth protecting?”

Jess opened her mouth to answer but paused and closed it with a snap to think. “I think the people are worth protecting. I think the ideas the Constitution laid out are worth protecting. I don’t always agree with the government and what it’s done though. But aside from that, yes America as an ideal is worth protecting.”

“Excellent. Would you be interested in working with me and a few others from time to time? Black ops sometimes, over the table other times. I will be honest with my team, but we may not always be able to go to the authorities.”

“What kind of oversight is there? This sounds like it could go bad easy enough.”

“Just ourselves. You can walk any time if you feel it’s going in places you aren’t comfortable with.”

Jess offered her hand. “Fair enough. I’m in as long as HYDRA isn’t involved.”

“Oh no. In fact they, and their spin-offs are our main targets. Welcome to the Daughters of Liberty, Spider-Woman. I’ll be in touch.” As she stood she pulled out her phone, typing and then looking up to Jess, whose phone rang. “My contact. Don’t bother trying to track the number. It’s bouncing off a bunch of servers and other computer things I don’t quite get.”
